Who needs the NY 5-Hour Course in NYC

New York State law says every new driver has to finish a 5-hour pre-licensing course before setting up a first road test. That holds true whether you are 18 or well past it.

Our online NY 5-Hour Course is for you if you are:

A note for drivers under 18. If you are working toward a Junior driver license (Class DJ) or Junior motorcycle license (Class MJ), you cannot take the 5-hour pre-licensing course online in New York. State rules require teens to complete it in a classroom or through a high school driver education program.

NY 5-Hour Course vs Driver Education

The MV-278 and the MV-285 look alike on paper, but they are two different certificates.

NY 5-Hour Course

NY 5-Hour Course - frequently asked questions

What exactly is the NY 5-Hour Course? +
It is New York State's pre-licensing requirement for anyone getting a license for the first time. It goes over traffic law, safe-driving habits and spotting hazards, and finishes with an MV-278 certificate - the document you need to schedule your New York road test.
Can I really do the whole thing online in NYC? +
Yes. Drivers 18 and up can finish the entire 5-hour course online. Ours is NYS DMV-approved and accepted right across the state.
How much does the NY 5-Hour Course cost? +
A flat $40 - no hidden fees, no extras, and nothing charged for the certificate.
How soon do I get the MV-278 certificate? +
It is emailed to you as soon as you clear the closing review.
Is your online 5-hour course accepted by the NYS DMV? +
Yes. We follow the official NYS DMV syllabus and are approved to issue the MV-278 certificate of completion.
Can drivers under 18 take it online? +
No. New York requires drivers under 18 to complete the pre-licensing course in a classroom or through a high school driver education program. Junior license applicants (Class DJ or MJ) cannot use an online course.
What devices work for the online course? +
Anything with internet and a current browser - phone, tablet, laptop or desktop. It is mobile-friendly and your progress carries across devices.
Can I take the course in Spanish? +
Yes. The full course, the closing review and the MV-278 certificate are all available in Spanish.
What is the difference between the MV-278 and the MV-285? +
The MV-278 is the 5-hour pre-licensing certificate you get from our course, good for one year. The MV-285 is the Driver Education certificate from a high school or college, good for two years. Either one qualifies you for the New York road test.
Is there a final exam in the course? +
There is a short review at the end. It is low-pressure and you can revisit questions if you need to - the point is to confirm the material stuck, not to catch you out.
How long is the MV-278 good for? +
One year from the date it is issued. You need to book your New York road test before it expires - the test itself can fall after that, as long as the appointment was set while the certificate was still valid.
What if I cannot finish it all at once? +
Stop anywhere, log back in on any device, and continue from where you left off. Most people finish the course in two or three sittings across a few days.
How do I book my New York road test afterward? +
Once your MV-278 arrives, head to the NYS DMV website and reserve a road test slot. Keep your permit number and certificate number handy.
Is defensive driving the same as the NY 5-Hour Course? +
No. Defensive driving (the Point and Insurance Reduction Program, or PIRP/IPIRP) is a 6-hour course that trims points and lowers insurance costs. It does not qualify you for a road test. The 5-hour pre-licensing course is a separate requirement that defensive driving cannot stand in for.
Do I need my learner permit before signing up? +
Yes. You must have your NYS Photo Learner Permit before you begin - the permit number is entered during sign-up and printed on your MV-278.
Can I take the course if my license was revoked? +
Yes. Drivers who lost a license to revocation often need to retake the 5-hour course to re-qualify for the road test, and the online format is the fastest way to get it done.
Do I need a webcam for the course? +
A webcam helps confirm your identity at the start, but it is not needed the whole way through. You move through the material on your own, at your own speed.
